Registering a Business or Applying for a Licence

Are you setting up your own business or planning changes to your existing business? – Then you need to register or reregister your business with the city council. If you are intending to give up a commercial enterprise, you must also remember to deregister.

You can do all of this

  • at the Gewerbemeldestelle (business registration office),
  • at the Dienstleistungszentrum Wirtschaft Business Services Center(DLZW), and
  • at the Bezirksverwaltungsstellen (district authorities).

The fee for registering or changing an entry is €22.00. For companies subject to compulsory registration in the Commercial Register the fee is €30.00. Deregistration is free of charge for all companies.

The DLZW also offers advice on a wide range of subjects. You can find out:

  • whether your practice must be registered as a business,
  • the next step after registration,
  • whether you require a licence for your business, and
  • which documents you must enclose with which registration/application.

Registration of a Business

When you set up a business, you must register it. You are self-employed if:

  • you run your business during a given period
  • with sole authority to make decisions.
  • You are working at your own risk and
  • for your own account.

Reregistering

If you have already registered a business and

  • are planning to relocate your premises within Dortmund, or
  • you intend to expand or change your area of activity,

you must reregister your business with the city council. All other relevant authorities will be informed automatically of your re-registration.

Deregistering a Business

As soon as you completely give up your business, you should deregister it. All relevant authorities will be automatically informed of the closure.

Please note that companies with more than one proprietor must be deregistered by all partners.
